The frames

Laboratory frame of reference (wiki)
In physics, the laboratory frame of reference, or lab frame for short, is a frame of reference centered on the laboratory in which the experiment (either real or thought experiment) is done. This is the reference frame in which the laboratory is at rest. Also, this is usually the frame of reference in which measurements are made, since they are presumed (unless stated otherwise) to be made by laboratory instruments. An example of instruments in a lab frame, would be the particle detectors at the detection facility of a particle accelerator.
Center of momentum frame (wiki)
A center of momentum frame (or zero-momentum frame, or COM frame) of a system is any inertial frame in which the center of mass is at rest (has zero velocity). Note that the center of momentum of a system is not a location, but rather defines a particular inertial frame (a velocity and a direction). Thus "center of momentum" already means "center of momentum frame" and is a short form of this phrase. A special case of the center of momentum frame is the center of mass frame: an inertial frame in which the center of mass (which is a physical point) is at the origin at all times. In all COM frames, the center of mass is at rest, but it may not necessarily be at rest at the origin of the coordinate system.
In the centre of momentum frame, the total linear momentum of the system is zero. Also, the total energy of the system is the minimal energy as seen from all possible inertial reference frames. In relativity, COM frame exists for a massive system. In the COM frame the total energy of the system is the "rest energy", and this quantity (when divided by the factor c2) therefore gives the rest mass (positive invariant mass) of the system.
Systems which have energy but zero invariant mass (such as photons moving in a single direction, or equivalently, plane electromagnetic waves) do not have COM frames, because there is no frame which they have zero net momentum. Because of the invariance of the speed of light, such massless systems must travel at the speed of light in any frame, and therefore always possess a net momentum-magnitude which is equal to their energy divided by the speed of light: p = E/c.

Let us note that:
"A “frame of reference” is a standard relative to which motion and rest may be measured; any set of points or objects that are at rest relative to one another enables us, in principle, to describe the relative motions of bodies. A frame of reference is therefore a purely kinematical device, for the geometrical description of motion without regard to the masses or forces involved. A dynamical account of motion leads to the idea of an “inertial frame,” or a reference frame relative to which motions have distinguished dynamical properties. For that reason an inertial frame has to be understood as a spatial reference frame together with some means of measuring time, so that uniform motions can be distinguished from accelerated motions. The laws of Newtonian dynamics provide a simple definition: an inertial frame is a reference-frame with a time-scale, relative to which the motion of a body not subject to forces is always rectilinear and uniform, accelerations are always proportional to and in the direction of applied forces, and applied forces are always met with equal and opposite reactions. It follows that, in an inertial frame, the center of mass of a system of bodies is always at rest or in uniform motion. It also follows that any other frame of reference moving uniformly relative to an inertial frame is also an inertial frame. For example, in Newtonian celestial mechanics, taking the “fixed stars” as a frame of reference, we can determine an (approximately) inertial frame whose center is the center of mass of the solar system; relative to this frame, every acceleration of every planet can be accounted for (approximately) as a gravitational interaction with some other planet in accord with Newton's laws of motion."

Orbite chiuse e aperte

F_g= G \,\frac {{M}{m}}{r^2},
F_c= m \frac {v^2}{r}
G \,\frac {{M}{m}}{r^2}=m \frac {v^2}{r};
v= \sqrt \frac {{G}{M}}{r}.
v=2 \pi \frac {r}{T}
è possibile esprimere T in funzione di r, ottenendo
T^2=\frac {{4} {\pi^2}}{GM}\,r^3.
K =\frac {{4} {\pi^2}}{GM}
r_{geos} =\sqrt[3] {\frac {G M T_{rot}^2} {4 \pi^2}} = 42.168 \, km

A motorist drives North for 35 min at 85 km/hr and then stops for 15 minutes. He then continues North, traveling 130 km in 2 hr. What is the total displacement? What is the average velocity?

From A to B : 35 min at 85 km/hr
From B to B : 15 min at rest
From B to C : 2 hr on a distance of 130 km

D = Displacemnet A -- > C = (130+ 35/60 hr x 85 km/hr) = 179 km
Average velocity = D/t = 179 km / (35/60+15/60+2) hr = 63.2 km/hr
In the average velocity, we have the tital time, including also 15/60 hr,  the time spent at rest.

Transparent materials for solar energy

"Researchers in the US have developed a new kind of organic solar cell that converts a small but significant fraction of the sunlight that falls onto it into electricity, while still allowing most of the visible part of that light to pass through. Thanks to this transparency, the team says that the cell could be mounted onto windows in buildings or cars in order to tap a currently under-exploited source of energy."

Noether's (first) theorem

"Noether's (first) theorem states that any differentiable symmetry of the action of a physical system has a corresponding conservation law. The theorem was proved by German mathematician Emmy Noether in 1915 and published in 1918.[1] The action of a physical system is the integral over time of a Lagrangian function (which may or may not be an integral over space of a Lagrangian density function), from which the system's behavior can be determined by the principle of least action.
Noether's theorem has become a fundamental tool of modern theoretical physics and the calculus of variations. A generalization of the seminal formulations on constants of motion in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics (1788 and 1833, respectively), it does not apply to systems that cannot be modeled with a Lagrangian; for example,dissipative systems with continuous symmetries need not have a corresponding conservation law." SNEWS

When a red giant star collaps on itself a burst of neutrinos is produced. This occurs before that light is emitted in the explosion, The SuperNova Early Warning System (SNEWS) is a network of neutrino detectors designed to give an early warning to astronomers of a supernova event in the Milky Way. The neutrino pulse from supernova 1987A was detected 3 hours before the photons.
The current members of SNEWS are Borexino, Super-Kamiokande, LVD, SNO and IceCube.

Neutrinos in IceCube

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino telescope constructed at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica. Similar to its predecessor, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA), IceCube contains thousands of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs), each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. More http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IceCube_Neutrino_Observatory
"IceCube, which was completed in December 2010, is a kilometer-cubed array of photodetectors that have been drilled down into the Antarctic ice cap... The IceCube team compared 13 months of their data (collected when the array was half finished) to observations of 117 Gamma-Ray Bursts measured independently over the same time period. Contrary to expectations, no high-energy neutrinos were detected within a half-hour of each GRB. Theorists may need to rethink their models of GRBs, as well as look for other possible sources for the highest energy cosmic rays." This is what Michael Schirber writes in

Artificial leaf

"Photosynthesis, nature's way of converting sunlight to fuel, happens all around us, from leaves on a tree to the smallest blade of grass. But finding a way to mimic the ability cheaply and efficiently has confounded engineers for decades.Now researchers have taken a step toward this elusive feat, with a device that is even more efficient than natural photosynthesis and relies on low-cost, abundant materials.
Conventional solar cells produce electricity when a photovoltaic material is exposed to light. The new device goes a step further, using the resulting electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, which can be stored and used to generate electricity via a fuel cell."

Tevatron claims glimpse of particles beyond standard model

Tevatron claims possible glimpse of particles beyond the standard model - April 06, 2011
"Just as the Tevatron, the proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, enters its final months of operations, possible signals of new physics are emerging. First came a report from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment of a puzzling asymmetry in the way top quarks decay into lighter particles. Now the same experiment is reporting on the possible observation of particles beyond the standard model in collisions that produce a W boson – a particle of the weak nuclear force. Spokesmen for the experiment say the signal may be due to random fluctuations, but that it’s nonetheless causing some excitement. “Either what we thought we knew about this process is wrong or there’s a totally new effect,” says Giovanni Punzi, CDF co-spokesman."

Impedenza meccanica

x(t)=A cos (ωot + φ)

m a(t) + k x(t) = F(t)

x(t)=A cos (ωt)

Otteniamo l'equazione

(-m ω2+k) A cos (ωt) = Fo cos(ωt),

ECLIPSING BINARY STARS

"Eclipsing binary stars are just one several types of variable stars. These stars appear as a single point of light to an observer, but based on its brightness variation and spectroscopic observations we can say for certain that the single point of light is actually two stars in close orbit around one another. The variations in light intensity from eclipsing binary stars is caused by one star passing in front of the other relative to an observer. If we assume that the stars are spherical and that they have circular orbits, then we can easily approximate how the light varies as a function of time for eclipsing binary stars. These calculations can be performed in a relatively short computer program."

Inertial frames of reference

Inertial frame of reference, adapted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In physics, an inertial frame of reference (also inertial reference frame or inertial frame or Galilean reference frame) is a frame of reference that describes time and homogeneously and isotropically, and in a time independent manner. All inertial frames are in a state of constant, rectilinear motion with respect to one another; they are not accelerating.
Measurements in one inertial frame can be converted to measurements in another by a simple transformation (the Galilean transformation in Newtonian physics and the Lorentz transformation in special relativity). Physical laws take the same form in all inertial frames. In a non-inertial reference frame the laws of physics depend upon the acceleration of that frame of reference, and the usual physical forces must be supplemented by fictitious forces.
The motion of a body can only be described relative to something else - other bodies, observers, or a set of space-time coordinates. These are called frames of reference. If the coordinates are chosen badly, the laws of motion may be more complex than necessary. For example, suppose a free body (one having no external forces on it) is at rest at some instant. In many coordinate systems, it would begin to move at the next instant, even though there are no forces on it. However, a frame of reference can always be chosen in which it remains stationary.
An intuitive summary of inertial frames can be given as: In an inertial reference frame, the laws of mechanics take their simplest form.òIn an inertial frame, Newton's first law (the law of inertia) is satisfied: Any free motion has a constant magnitude and direction.Newton's second law for a particle takes the form:

F = m a

with F the net force (a vector), m the mass of a particle and a the acceleration of the particle (also a vector) which would be measured by an observer at rest in the frame. The force F is the vector sum of all "real" forces on the particle, such as electromagnetic, gravitational, nuclear and so forth. In contrast, Newton's second law in a rotating frame of reference, rotating at angular rate Ω about an axis, takes the form:

F' = m a'

which looks the same as in an inertial frame, but now the force F′ is the resultant of not only F, but also additional terms:

F' = F - 2m Ω x v'-m Ω x (Ω  x r')

where the angular rotation of the frame is expressed by the vector Ω pointing in the direction of the axis of rotation, and with magnitude equal to the angular rate of rotation Ω, symbol  x denotes the vector cross product, vector r' locates the body and vector v' is the velocity of the body according to a rotating observer (different from the velocity seen by the inertial observer). We assume  for the sake of simplicity that the angular velocity  is constant in magnitude and direction.
The extra terms in the force F′ are the "fictitious" forces for this frame. (The first extra term is the Coriolis force, the second the centrifugal force). These terms all have these properties: they vanish when Ω = 0; that is, they are zero for an inertial frame (which, of course, does not rotate).
All observers agree on the real forces, F; only non-inertial observers need fictitious forces. The laws of physics in the inertial frame are simpler because unnecessary forces are not present.
In Newton's time the fixed stars were invoked as a reference frame, supposedly at rest relative to absolute space. In reference frames that were either at rest with respect to the fixed stars or in uniform translation relative to these stars, Newton's laws of motion were supposed to hold. In contrast, in frames accelerating with respect to the fixed stars, an important case being frames rotating relative to the fixed stars, the laws of motion did not hold in their simplest form, but had to be supplemented by the addition of fictitious forces, for example, the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force.
 The concept of inertial frames of reference is no longer tied to either the fixed stars or to absolute space.
Rather, the identification of an inertial frame is based upon the simplicity of the laws of physics in the frame. In particular, the absence of fictitious forces is their identifying property.

.
